Is It Safe To Take Ibuprofen And Acetaminophen Together
Youve probably heard of both acetaminophen and ibuprofen . Theyre two of the most popular over-the-counter pain killers. But do you know the difference between them?
While acetaminophen and ibuprofen both function as pain relievers, they are different kinds of drugs. Acetaminophen, also known as APAP, is a nonopioid analgesic and antipyretic agent that reduce pain and fever. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces inflammation, pain, and mild to moderate fever.
People take ibuprofen and acetaminophen for headaches, menstrual cramps, back pain, mouth or tooth pain, and fevers. You can safely take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together. Before you do, though, you should be aware of the correct dosage for each separately.

The usual dosage of ibuprofen for adults is 200 to 400 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours as needed. The maximum dosage for ibuprofen brought over the counter is 1200mg . If you get ibuprofen prescribed by your doctor, they may put you on a higher dosage, with a maximum of 3200mg per day but if you are buying it over the counter you should never take more than 1200mg per 24 hours .
Children weighing less than 11kg or younger than 12 years will need a lower dosage.
Advil + Tylenol Better Than Opioids For Oral Pain
“What we know is that prescribing narcotics should be a last resort,” said study co-author Anita Aminoshariae, an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Dental Medicine, in Cleveland.
In the study, Aminoshariae’s team reviewed more than 460 published studies and found that a combination of 400 milligrams of ibuprofen and 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen was more effective than opioid medications for adults.
The investigators also found that opioids or drug combinations that included opioids caused the greatest number of side effects — including drowsiness, respiratory problems, nausea/vomiting and constipation — in both children and adults.
“The best available data suggests that the use of nonsteroidal medications , with or without acetaminophen, offers the most favorable balance between benefits and harms, optimizing efficacy while minimizing acute adverse events,” Aminoshariae added.
“No patient should go home in pain. That means that opioids are sometimes the best option, but certainly should not be the first option,” Aminoshariae said in a Case Western news release.
The study was published recently in The Journal of the American Dental Association.

Combining Tylenol And Advil To Reduce Fever And Pain In Children And Adults
When deciding what medication to use for pain management or fever reduction, many people turn to two of the best over-the-counter options: Tylenol and Advil or Motrin . Both are available in name-brand or store-brand varieties, and the later work equally well.
Often, those looking for pain relief assume they must choose one medication or the other when, in fact, it is possible to use both medications together as each is processed differently by the bodyâacetaminophen is processed through the liver while ibuprofen clears through the kidneys. Additionally, studies have indicated that, when combined correctly, acetaminophen and ibuprofen provide greater relief than when used independently of one another.
For Adults and children over age 12
Researchers have recently investigated just how powerful the combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen are in managing pain in adults. Studies indicate that, when combined, the two offer an equal level of pain relief as opioid narcotics.
For children over the age of 12 and adults, both medications may be taken together at the same time. It is important to note the recommended dosage limits for adults and children over the age of 12:
- 3,000 mg per day for acetaminophen
- 1,200 mg per day for ibuprofen
The release of this drug is promising news as doctors look for alternatives to narcotics while the nation continues to battle the opioid epidemic.
For Fever Reduction in Children Under 12
Other Otc Pain Relievers
Other common OTC pain relievers like naproxen and aspirin can also be safely combined with acetaminophen.
However, never mix these medications with ibuprofen because theyre the same kind of drug, and a combination can cause kidney damage or other severe side effects.
As a reminder, aspirin should never be given to children or infants.

Combined Acetaminophen Ibuprofen Produces Similar Amount Of Pain Relief As Opioids In Ed Patients
Disclosures: We were unable to process your request. Please try again later. If you continue to have this issue please contact .Andrew K. Chang
ED patients with acute extremity pain had neither clinically important nor statistically significant differences in pain reduction at 2 hours when receiving a single dose of ibuprofen and acetaminophen or several different combinations of opioids and acetaminophen, according to findings recently published in JAMA.
Study lead authorAndrew K. Chang, MD, MS, of the department of emergency medicine at Albany Medicine College in New York, told Healio Family Medicine the idea for the study came while travelling overseas, where some countries have analgesics that combine ibuprofen and acetaminophen into one tablet.
I was struck at what I thought was a simple yet obvious combination of two different over-the-counter analgesics and what that could mean in terms of nonopioid pain control, he said. In designing the study, we didnt think Tylenol or Motrin alone was adequate to treat acute severe extremity pain, but we did think that perhaps the combination of the two were enough to provide pain relief on par with commonly used opioids.
Chang acknowledged that findings from the acute setting may not translate into pain management in a primary care setting.

What Is Ibuprofen And Tylenol
Ibuprofen is a medication that is classified as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve pain from various ailments. This medication works by blocking the body’s production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation.
Ibuprofen is used to treat conditions such as:
dental pain/mouth and jaw pain
alleviate minor aches and pain due to cold or flu
Tylenol and other acetaminophens are pain relievers , and fever reducers used to treat pain and fever symptoms associated with many conditions. Unlike ibuprofen, Tylenol works by blocking the brain from releasing substances that cause the feeling of pain.
Tylenol is used to treat conditions such as:
If you suffer from severe liver damage, you should not use Tylenol. There are many brands and forms of acetaminophen available. Therefore, always read the dosage instructions thoroughly because each kind may require a different dose.

In one word or less: Yes. If you have a bad headache and find both Tylenol and Advil in your medicine cabinet, go ahead and reach for both. Since the medications work differently and are processed in the body by different organs, it is safe for otherwise healthy individuals to use both concurrently, or by alternating medications with each dose, says John Raimo, M.D., chair of medicine at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills in Queens, NY.
Robert Glatter, M.D., an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, takes it a step further. Taking them together has an additive or synergistic effect on pain relief, says Dr. Glatter. Plus, both can help bring a fever down. In fact, the drugs work so well together that in March 2020 the FDA approved the first over-the-counter combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen, marketed as Advil Dual Action.
So how does each drug work? Lets take a look.
Can You Mix Ibuprofen And Tylenol
Some people find Ibuprofen, commonly marketed under the brand name Advil, to be the best over-the-counter medication for minor aches and pains. At the same time, others may find the best relief from Tylenol or other acetaminophen medicines.
However, sometimes combining the two seems to be the only way to manage pain symptoms. This raises the question:

Side Effects Of Ibuprofen
Rare but serious adverse events of ibuprofen and acetaminophen include allergic reactions , hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and chest pain. Too much ibuprofen can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, and it can worsen stomach ulcers. Liver damage may occur in the overuse of acetaminophen. These symptoms require medical attention. You should call 911 or seek out an emergency department as soon as possible.
How Does Tylenol Work
Thats less clear. Acetaminophen has been around for nearly 150 years, and it has been sold as Tylenol since 1955. About 50 million Americans take it each week, according to the manufacturer. It might come as a surprise, therefore, to learn that experts still are uncertain the exact mechanism at play that makes the drug so effective. Some evidence, says Dr. Glatter, suggests that it targets the central nervous system, tamping down nerve signals that cause you to feel pain.
One thing is clear: Unlike Advil and other NSAIDs, Tylenol does not reduce inflammation. Although acetaminophen can have a similar effect , it works through a different pathway, says Dr. Raimo.

Can I take 3 Advil and 2 Tylenol at the same time?
It is Advil liquid gel 200 and Tylenol rapid release both at the same time. Probably would not repeat the dose until the following day, only if needed. I have a L5 S1 nerve pain. Just got ESI injection last week, have pain flair from the injection. Advil alone does not do much neither does Tylenol alone. Read somewhere that they were effective together. Also, was prescribed the Medrol dose pack and am very nervous about taking it, plus I am on vacation… so thought I would give the above a shot before I took the pack
The Medrol dose pack is relatively safe it will help reduce the inflammation of an inflamed nerve, so you may feel some relief with the dose pack.
Many of my patients take the combination of Advil and Tylenol together and they feel it does help more than either alone.
How Does Advil Work
Advil is whats called an NSAID, or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This type of drug, which also includes aspirin and Aleve , prevents certain enzymes in your body from producing chemicals called prostaglandins. These are hormones that trigger inflammation. They also help produce the pain you feel when you have an injury. NSAIDs like Advil offer relief by interrupting this process.

Which Is Safer: Ibuprofen Or Acetaminophen
One isnt safer than the other, says Dr. Massachi. They both have their own issues and potential for side effects and abuse and must be taken with caution and in appropriate quantities to ensure they are effective while also being non-hazardous. But one isnt more effective than the other per se, and choosing which drug to take should align with the patients symptoms .
Is It Safe To Take Ibuprofen And Tylenol Together
Over-the-counter pain relievers are a great option to treat everyday aches and pains. They are widely available and help remedy mild to moderate pain from a variety of conditions: sore throats, menstrual cramps, toothaches, sprains, and most acute pain. Some of the most popular pain medications are ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
You might know acetaminophen by its brand name, Tylenol. Ibuprofen is also a generic pain reliever branded as Advil and Motrin.
Acetaminophen is a medication that is usually metabolized by the liver, says Sasan Massachi, MD, a primary care physician in Beverly Hills, California. Ibuprofen is an NSAID that causes inhibition in a specific enzyme within the body.
Another difference is that acetaminophen works effectively as a fever reducer. Ibuprofen is not as effective at reducing fever.
It is safe to use acetaminophen and ibuprofen together in the recommended amount. A 2019 Cochrane Review found ibuprofen plus paracetamol provided better pain relief than either drug alone and reduced the chance of needing additional pain relievers over approximately eight hours. A Harvard review found ibuprofen and acetaminophen combined was as effective as opioids, such as codeine or Vicodin, for severe acute pain.

Finally, when ordering something, order two sizes up if no size chart is provided because sizing charts vary between brands.
Can You Take Acetaminophen And Ibuprofen Together
It’s generally safe to take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together, as long as you follow proper dosing instructions. That’s because the medications work differently in the body. They’re also eliminated by different organsthe liver for acetaminophen and the kidneys for ibuprofenso you don’t need to worry about excess organ strain. The two medications don’t cause additional side effects when taken together .
What’s more, multiple studies have shown increased effectiveness when taking acetaminophen and ibuprofen together. One reason is they have different mechanisms of action at the cellular level, explains Bande Mangaliso Virgil, M.D., a pediatric hospitalist at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital. “They are both fever reducers and are helpful for pain . However, the key difference is ibuprofen is also a more potent anti-inflammatory medication, helpful for swelling that occurs with fevers.”

Is Advil Or Tylenol Better For Pain
Ibuprofen is the clear winner, says Dr. Glatter. While it may be used to treat mild to moderate pain, Tylenol is used to treat fever primarily, he says. Ibuprofen is a more effective approach for treating sprains and contusions to soft tissue and muscles. In adults, as well as young children and infants over 3 months, ibuprofen is also adept at treating strains, headaches, and fever.
Just because its safe to take Advil and Tylenol together doesnt necessarily mean you should, though. The combo can cause some people experience an upset stomach, cautions Dr. Glatter. If this is the case for you, its better to alternate times when you take each medication, spacing out the dosing, he recommends.
And finally, take note: These over-the-counter meds may not need a doctors prescription, but they can still be dangerous if you overdo it. Excessive use of Advil and other NSAIDs can boost your blood pressure and raise your risk of a heart attack or stroke, for example. Too much Tylenol damages your liver, and that can be fatal or require a liver transplant. Make sure to take no more than the recommended dose. For Advil, thats 1,200 mg per day, or six tablets total. Doses should be spaced four to six hours apart. Dont take more than 3,000 mg of Tylenol per day. Space doses four to six hours apart for regular strength and six hours apart for extra strength. Dr. Glatter advises parents to check with their doctor before giving either medication to children under 12.
