A Small Animal Study Published Earlier This Year Suggests That Timing Of Non

Many arthritis patients use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as ibuprofen or naproxen, to ease pain, as do many people who are recovering from various types of surgery. While reaching for these drugs whenever pain strikes might seem like the obvious way to go , there might be another factor to consider: the time of day when you take them.

According to a new study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, using NSAIDs during the daytime might be preferable to taking them at night .

This preliminary finding comes from a study that compared the effects of NSAID timing on pain and post-operative healing in 16 mice who had tibia fracture surgery.

In the study, mice were randomly assigned to two groups: One group was given NSAID injections during rest periods every day for three days following surgery the other received the same NSAID dose for the same period but it was administered at a time of day when the mice would normally be active . The medication/dose was equivalent to giving a human 500 mg of ibuprofen every eight hours.

Two weeks after surgery, the mice that had received NSAIDs during the active part of their day had returned to putting weight on the affected limb, whereas mice treated during the resting phase still showed slower recovery, the authors wrote.

Why might timing of NSAID medication matter? It has to do with your biological clock. Or, in this case, a mouses biological clock.

How To Take Naprosyn

This oral medication can be taken as an immediate or extended-release tablet, suspension form, or even topically. If you are taking the extended-release Naprosyn tablets, swallow them whole. Do not crush, split, chew, or try to dissolve them.

You can take Naprosyn with food, milk, or antacids to help decrease the chances of an upset stomach. If you are taking antacids, avoid taking any with ingredients such as magnesium oxide or aluminum hydroxide. If you are taking the EC tablets, make sure you take the antacid and your Naprosyn dose at least two hours apart from each other.

As a rule for all NSAIDs, Naprosyn treatment should begin with the lowest effective dose and be used for the shortest possible duration. If your pain is severe enough, your provider may prescribe opioid medications as well. Examples of opioids include hydrocodone, oxycodone, and codeine.

For less severe pain, you can take Naprosyn with other pain relievers like Tylenol. However, it should not be taken together with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and celecoxib.

What Are Painkillers And Nsaids

Painkillers and NSAIDs, are types of drugs called analgesics, which are used to treat pain.

The greatest difference is that painkillers target the levels of pain youre feeling, by interrupting pain signals before they get to the brain.

NSAIDs, which can also be called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, help manage pain and fever, mostly by reducing inflammation.

However, if you have long term pain or inflammation, they are unlikely to improve the underlying problem thats causing it.

Long Term Side Effects

Aleve Makes Her Drowsy

Naproxen can cause an ulcer in your stomach or gut if you take it for a long time.

Your doctor may tell you not to take naproxen if you have a stomach ulcer or you have had one in the past. If you need to take naproxen but are at risk of getting a stomach ulcer, your doctor may prescribe another medicine for you to take alongside naproxen to protect your stomach.

The most common symptom of a stomach ulcer is a burning or gnawing pain in the centre of the stomach. But stomach ulcers are not always painful and some people may have other symptoms, such as indigestion, heartburn and feeling sick.

If you’re prone to stomach ulcers or have had one before, take paracetamol instead of naproxen as it’s gentler on your stomach.

What Other Medications Interact With Naprosyn

Using certain other medications may affect how Naprosyn works or increase your risk of side effects.

Avoid taking Naprosyn with other drugs in the same class . Taking more than one NSAID at a time is dangerous. There is a much higher risk of side effects and an even greater risk of liver and kidney failure.

Several other drugs may interact with Naprosyn, including but not limited to:

  • Probenecid
  • Certain heart medications
  • Diuretics
  • Digoxin
  • Lithium

Naprosyn can increase the concentration of drugs like digoxin and lithium in the blood when taken together. You should also be aware that Naprosyn can reduce the effectiveness of other medications such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers, and diuretics.

Additionally, minor interactions can occur if taking Naprosyn with certain antacids or cholestyramine. Both drugs can delay the absorption of naproxen in the body.

Always inform your prescriber about your current medications, especially if youre taking any of the drugs listed above.

Naproxen Use And Chemistry

Is naproxen a strong painkiller? While naproxen is not a narcotic pain medication, it can still be used for minor pains, body aches, and headaches. Many people find this to be one of the best over-the-counter medications for treating mild to moderate aches and pains. Naproxen helps to relieve the discomfort associated with inflammatory conditions as well. These conditions might include arthritis and other types of disorders involving the bones or muscles.

Naproxen works very similar to opioid pain medications such as those that contain hydrocodone, tramadol, or oxycodone. The stronger pain killers work by binding to the bodys opioid receptors. They are well-known to lead to reactions of the central nervous system. These reactions often include dissociation and euphoria. That is why narcotic pain medications often make someone feel high.

However, naproxen works a bit differently. The chemical reactions occurring in ones body after using naproxen arent the same as when taking narcotics. Since naproxen is an NSAID it inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. When it goes into your bloodstream, COX or cyclo-oxygenase enzymes producing prostaglandin get blocked. This can take away your pain for anywhere from around 30 minutes to many hours. Naproxen and other NSAIDs dont bind to the bodys opioid receptors either, so you wont get the euphoria you would get with the narcotic pain medications.
