Best For Heart Health

Can’t find your Excedrin Migraine pills at the pharmacy? Here’s why

You’ve probably heard about taking daily low-dose aspirin for heart health, especially if you’ve had a heart attack or currently have heart disease. It’s useful because it prevents your blood from clotting. In people whose arteries are narrowed, a clot can block blood flow to your heart or brain and cause a heart attack or stroke.

However, aspirin isn’t safe for everyone, and as with any drug, you and your healthcare provider need to weigh the potential benefits and risks before deciding whether a daily aspirin regimen is right for you, and what dosage is appropriate.

Properties Of Otc Pain Relievers

The four main OTC pain drugs on the market are:

  • To relieve pain from injury or nerve damage
  • To lower a fever
  • To lessen some of the symptomssuch as sinus painof allergies, colds, or the flu

The choice of drug depends largely on the condition you need to treat and the potential problems that may prevent you from using a particular product.

How Do I Know If Analgesics Have Affected My Kidneys

Your doctor can check your kidneys by doing a simple blood test called a serum creatinine test. The results of the serum creatinine test can be used to estimate your glomerular filtration rate . Your GFR number tells your doctor how much kidney function you have.

A urine test for the presence of protein may also be done. Persistent protein in the urine may be an early indication of kidney damage.

Are There Specific Warnings Associated With Nsaid Use

The Food and Drug Administration requires that the labeling of NSAIDs contain these specific warnings:

These warnings are for non-aspirin NSAIDs:

  • Non-aspirin NSAIDs can increase the chance of heart attack or stroke. This risk may be greater if you have heart disease or risk factors for heart disease. However, the risk may also be increased in people who do not have heart disease or those risk factors. This risk can occur early in treatment and may increase with longer use.
  • Heart problems caused by non-aspirin NSAIDs can happen within the first weeks of use and may happen more frequently with higher doses or with long-term use.
  • Non-aspirin NSAIDs should not be used right before or after heart bypass surgery.

This warning is for all NSAIDs including aspirin:

NSAIDs may increase the chance of serious stomach and bowel side effects like ulcers and bleeding. These side effects can occur without warning signs. This risk may be greater in people who:

Advil Aleve And Tylenol: Whats The Difference

Production Mishap Causes Excedrin Shortage

You wake up with a terrible headache, a sore muscle or yesterdays sunburn is bothering you, and shuffle your way to your medicine cabinet. You open the cabinet, hoping to find something to help with the pain and discomfort, but find yourself faced with three choices: Advil, Aleve and Tylenol. Which one should you take? What are the differences to consider before taking?

All of these pharmaceuticals are useful to treat pain and reduce fever, which is why theyre such common occurrences in households, said David E. Potter, Ph.D., professor and chair of pharmaceutical sciences with the Texas A& M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy. However, there are some instances where one of these medicines may work better than its counterparts.

To help navigate when to choose which of these common over-the-counter medications, Potter offers the following information about each pain and fever-reducer:

Acetaminophen is a popular option for treating cold and flu-like symptoms, but Potter cautions that users need to be aware of how much they take in a day. Since acetaminophen is often combined with other over-the-counter cold medications that contain fever-reducing ingredients, people may end up taking multiple doses and exceeding the daily limitations.

Advil and Aleve

Although most people have these medications or are aware of them, Potter suggests that not everybody should use these as their primary form of pain management.

Which Pain Relievers Are Ok Before After Covid

Covid-19 vaccination can lead to side effects, but is it OK to use over-the-counter pain medications … like ibuprofen?

Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Yes, getting a Covid-19 vaccine these days can be a bit of a pain, in more ways than one.

As a result, you may be tempted to take some pain relievers before or after vaccination. Acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can help combat the arm soreness, fever, chills, nausea, fatigue, headaches, and other side effects that you may experience from vaccination. But should you be taking such medications for such side effects?

Well, the answer is most definitely, potentially, possibly, probably not.

Many of the symptoms that you may get after vaccination are signs that your immune system is doing what it is supposed to be doing. The Covid-19 vaccines work by essentially passing some notes in the form of mRNA to the cells in your body. These notes serve as blueprints for your cells, saying in effect, hey, make this, with this being the spike protein found on the surface of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 .

If I Need Pain Medicines What Can I Do To Keep My Kidneys Healthy

Kidney disease caused by pain relievers is often preventable. Here are some things you can do to help keep your kidneys healthy.

How you take these medicines makes a difference:

  • Make sure you read the warning label before using any overthecounter analgesics.
  • Do not use overthecounter pain relievers more than 10 days for pain or more than three days for fever. If you have pain or fever for a longer time, you should see your doctor.
  • Avoid using pain medicines that contain a combination of ingredients, like aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine mixed together in one pill.
  • If you are taking pain medicines, increase the amount of fluid you drink to six to eight glasses a day.
  • If you are taking pain medicines, avoid drinking alcohol.

Talking with your doctor about pain medicines can also make a difference:

  • If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before taking a pain medicine, particularly NSAIDs and higher dose aspirin.
  • If you have high blood pressure or heart disease, make sure you only take NSAIDs under your doctors supervision. This is especially important if you take diuretic medications or are over 65 years of age.
  • Make sure your doctor knows about all medicines you are taking, even over-the-counter medicines.
