Urinary Retention: Does Drinking Water Really Help

What Are the Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Urinary retention is a condition characterized by an inability to fully empty the bladder. The bladder serves as a storage tank for urine, a substance made by the kidneys after they have filtered out waste and extra water from your blood. Once made, the urine travels to the bladder where it will stay until a person is ready to urinate. In a healthy individual, the bladder can hold up to two cups of urine comfortably for up to five hours.

Urinary retention can occur for a variety of reasons. Among men, an enlarged prostate is the most common cause. Among women, bladder muscle dysfunction and urinary stones are the typical culprits. Individuals with this condition may experience:

  • Difficulty starting the flow of urine
  • A weak urine flow
  • Feeling the need to urinate right after using the bathroom

What Are The Symptoms Of Analgesic Nephropathy

These are the most common symptoms of analgesic nephropathy:

  • Fatigue or weakness, feeling unwell
  • Blood in the urine
  • An increase in urination frequency or urgency
  • Pain in the back or flank area
  • A decrease in urine output
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Widespread swelling
  • Easy bruising or bleeding

Some people have no symptoms. Kidney damage may be picked up by routine blood tests. The symptoms of analgesic nephropathy may look like other medical conditions or problems. Always talk with your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

What Causes The Infection

The E. coli bacteria cause UTIs in 85% of cases, with other bacteria making up the remaining 15%. There are several reasons bacteria enter the urinary system. These include pregnancy, menopause, and sexual intercourse. Urinary catheters invite bacteria into the urethra and bring a high risk of a UTI. Other reasons include bladder stones and urinary tract malformation.

Frequent Urination Causes And Risk Factors

1. Bladder conditions

One major cause of frequent urination is a condition thats affecting your bladder in some way. This can be an infection or injury of the bladder, or it can be muscle, nerve or tissue changes that are affecting your bladder function. Some specific conditions that involve the bladder and may be causing frequent urination include:

  • Bladder stones a buildup of minerals that form in the urinary bladder and occurs more frequently in men.
  • Overactive bladder a condition that doesnt allow the bladder to hold urine properly, which results in problems like urine incontinence and leaky urine.
  • Interstitial cystitis also called painful bladder syndrome, this is a chronic condition that causes bladder pain and pressure, resulting in frequent urination.

2. Prostate conditions

The prostate is a gland thats located in the male reproductive system, just below the bladder. Frequent urination is one of the warning signs that you may have an issue with your prostate health, such as:

  • Enlarged prostate when the prostate becomes enlarged and pushes against the bladder and urinary tract.
  • Prostatitis an infectious disease that involves the prostate gland and can cause symptoms like frequent urination, fever, nausea, vomiting, pain during urination and an urgent feed to urinate.

3. Kidney conditions

4. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes

5. Urinary tract infections

6. Sexually transmitted diseases

7. Pregnancy

8. Stroke

9. Certain medications

10. Excess consumption of fluids

A British study noted that another NSAID, diclofenac , also eased symptoms: :

NSAIDs are effective in the treatment of nocturnal polyuria causing a decrease in nocturnal frequency with subjective symptom improvement. Our study suggests a novel treatment option for this common condition.

Nocturnal polyuria is doctorspeak for increased nighttime urine output. It can lead to frequent trips to the bathroom to pass this extra volume of fluid. A deep sleeper may end up with a bed-wetting problem.

Anatomical Causes For Urinating Often

There are many actual and misidentified reasons why a person might have to urinate frequently or immediately. The most common physical reasons for this condition to exist include: excessive alcohol consumption, drinking too much liquid, prostatitis, urinary tract infection, pregnancy, drug side effect, idiopathic incontinence or bladder cancer.

Many of these causes are very common and psychologically-induced versions of the syndrome are often misrepresented as coming from a suspected or unknown physical source or process. In our experience, a majority of chronic urinary concerns are of a mindbody nature.

Bladder Training And Exercises

Other treatments address frequent urination rather than an underlying cause. These include the below.

  • Kegel exercises: These regular daily exercises, which people often perform during pregnancy, can strengthen the muscles of the pelvis and urethra and support the bladder. For best results, perform Kegel exercises 1020 times per set, three times a day, for at least 48 weeks.
  • Biofeedback therapy: A person combines this treatment with Kegel exercises to enable them to become more aware of how their body functions. This increased awareness can help them improve the control of their pelvic muscles.
  • Bladder training: This involves training the bladder to hold urine longer.
  • Monitoring fluid intake: This may reveal that drinking a lot at certain times is the main cause of frequent urination.

The Risks Of Nsaids For Nocturia Or Bed

Despite the research and the anecdotes, we must point out that regular use of NSAIDs to control nighttime urination might put a strain on the kidneys . Your friend should ask his doctor to monitor kidney function. Anyone who experiences symptoms of frequent urination or bed-wetting should be evaluated by a physician. Other NSAID-related side effects include high blood pressure, indigestion, stomach ulcers, perforation of the stomach, small intestine or large intestine, fluid retention, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heart rhythms , congestive heart failure, liver damage and blood disorders.

Frequent urination can be a sign of a urinary tract infection , the most common kind of bacterial infection in pregnant women. Left untreated, a UTI can lead to a kidney infection, preterm labor, or both. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Pain or burning when you urinate
  • Blood-tinged urine
  • Stress incontinence that is more than just a couple of drops

What Is The Follow

Continued problems with frequent urination should be evaluated by your doctor and possibly a urologist. If medications are recommended, follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Mechanisms Of Urinary Continence

In healthy individuals, the urinary bladder senses the volume of urine by means of distention. Distention of the bladder excites afferent A-delta fibers that relay information to the pontine storage center in the brain. The brain, in turn, triggers efferent impulses to enhance urine storage through activation of the sympathetic innervation of the lower urinary tract . These impulses also activate the somatic, pudendal, and sacral nerves.1

The hypogastric nerves release norepinephrine to stimulate beta3-adrenoceptors in the detrusor and alpha1-adrenoceptors in the bladder neck and proximal urethra. The role of beta3-adrenoceptors is to mediate smooth-muscle relaxation and increase bladder compliance, whereas that of alpha1-adrenoceptors is to mediate smooth-muscle contraction and increase bladder outlet resistance.1 The somatic, pudendal, and sacral nerves release acetylcholine to act on nicotinic receptors in the striated muscle in the distal urethra and pelvic floor, which contract to increase bladder outlet resistance.1

Efferent sympathetic outflow and somatic outflow are stopped when afferent signaling to the brain exceeds a certain threshold. At this point, the parasympathetic outflow is activated via pelvic nerves. These nerves release acetylcholine, which then acts on muscarinic receptors in detrusor smooth-muscle cells to cause contraction. A number of transmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, and endorphins are involved in this process.1

Is Frequent Urination Normal During Pregnancy

Yes, frequent urination is normal during pregnancy. The problem will vary from one woman to another, though, depending on physical differences in other words, how your organs are arranged. Even slight differences in how your uterus sits in relationship to your bladder can make a difference in how often you feel the urge to go. Differences in changing hormones may also play a part.

Some women will hardly notice a change, while others will feel as if they’re spending most of the day and night in the bathroom.

Symptoms: How Often Is Frequent

Frequent urination is defined as urinating more often than what you consider normal. Urination may occur in small or large amounts. The Cleveland Clinic defines frequent urination as urinating more than 4 to 8 times per day for healthy people who are not pregnant.

Additional symptoms of a potential medical problem may include:

Talk to your doctor if the cause of frequent urination cant be explained by increased fluid intake, especially caffeine or alcohol.

Diagnosis: How To Determine Whats Causing Painful Urination

Living with Warfarin

To determine the cause of painful urination, your doctor may perform a urinalysis to analyze the amount of white blood cells, red bloods cells, protein, glucose, and foreign chemicals in your urine. The presence of white blood cells in urine can indicate a urinary tract infection.

Your doctor may also perform a urine culture to determine what kind of bacteria might be causing a urinary tract infection and what antibiotics will best treat the infection.

Anne Schuckman, MD, an assistant professor of urology and urologic oncology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, warns that a urine dipstick test alone may not be enough to properly diagnose and treat a urinary tract infection. In order to truly know if you have an infection, and what the appropriate antibiotic is, a patient needs a formal urinalysis and a urine culture, she says.

Additional tests can include:

  • Sexually transmitted infection screening

Drinking Water & Other Home Remedies For Urinary Retention

Urinary retention is often treated by addressing the underlying condition. For example, prostate medication can help to shrink an enlarged prostate so its no longer pressing on the urethra, which can improve urine flow. Pelvic floor physical therapy may be helpful for women with cystoceles to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and reduce urinary retention symptoms.

There are also a variety of natural remedies that can address slow urine flow, the most common one being hydration. It makes sense to think that drinking less water can ease symptoms , but thats actually not true. Water is essential to the function of the body and without it, blood vessels cant deliver important nutrients to the kidneys. In turn, the kidneys will only be able to make highly concentrated urine that irritates the bladder. Therefore, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day is one of the essential pieces of any treatment plan for urinary retention.

How much water you need per day depends on several factors, including where you live, your activity level, and your age. In general, the long-standing advice of drinking 8 cups of water per day is a good guideline to follow. And remember, liquids other than water can count towards that total, such as tea, coffee, sports drinks, and fruit juice. As long as you arent feeling thirsty on a regular basis and your urine is colorless or light yellow, youre likely drinking enough water for your needs.
