What Do They Do

Ibuprofen vs. Aleve vs. Turmeric vs. Tylenol (Updated with Aspirin) Pharmacist Chris Explains

Advil and Aleve work by inhibiting the COX enzyme that produces prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that the body makes to help heal injury or illness. However, they also cause inflammation and fever.

The body produces two COX enzymes: COX-1 and COX-2. Both play a role in the bodys inflammatory response. COX-2 also plays a role in maintaining the lining of the stomach and promoting blood clotting.

Advil and Aleve block COX-1 and COX-2, which explains their therapeutic action against inflammation and pain. It also explains some of the possible side effects of these drugs, which may include:

People with a history of medical conditions involving the digestive system, heart, or kidneys should speak to a doctor before taking Advil or Aleve. These NSAIDs may aggravate such conditions.

People should avoid taking Advil and Aleve together.

Since act on the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, there is no benefit in combining them. If necessary, people can combine an NSAID with acetaminophen, since these drugs have different mechanisms of action to treat pain and fever.

Combining Advil and Aleve can put people of additional side effects without improving the efficacy of either drug. Side effects of taking high amounts of NSAIDs or a combination of NSAIDs include:

A person should see a doctor if they experience side effects while taking an NSAID or if they take more than the recommended dosage.

Give Pain The Cold Shoulder

Tip 1 of 3

Applying ice to your shoulder when you start feeling pain can help reduce inflammation, provide relief and add to a speedy recovery. First, put the ice in a leak-proof plastic bag and wrap the bag in cloth, since putting ice directly on your skin can be painful and cause damage. Then, alternate between applying the ice for 15 minutes and removing it for 15 minutes. Do this 3-4 times a day for 2-3 days. Please see your doctor right away if the pain persists or gets worse.

Is It Safe To Take One Or Two Aleve Twice A Day For A Few Days

Question posted by WETEFT on 3 July 2010

Last updated on 4 July 2010 by Lil Stevie

Muscles in back are really aching/stiff. Two aleve help some but I want to take two twice a day until I can get to doctor. No allergies to asprin or rash etc. Advil didn’t seem to help very much. My wife’s Dr told her she could take three ADVIL every four hours when she had her dental surgery and then last year when she had her knee surgery. So if you can take that much Advil for short term, can you do the same thing with the ALEVE?

Lil Stevie

great answer mspage82. I agree. You should be careful about alcohol consumption when you are taking any nasid but a few more for short times wont hurt. Don’t let anyone tell you that you should just work thru the pain. It is not only a stupid idea but can cause the nerves to fire for so long in that area that after the injury is repaird the nerves keep on firing pain, pain, pain. Trust me it feels the same!!!

Aleve Dosage Forms And Strengths

Medically reviewed by Josephine Bawab, Pharm.D.

Aleve is a brand-name over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer. The active ingredient, naproxen sodium, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. NSAIDs work by blocking the bodys ability to produce prostaglandins, substances responsible for pain, fever, and swelling. However, unlike other NSAIDs and OTC pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, naproxen is long-acting. Aleve only needs to be taken once every eight to 12 hours orally for symptom relief.

How Long Can You Take Naproxen

Naproxen should only be taken over the short term. Taking naproxen over too long a period puts people at a greater risk for adverse events such as stomach bleeding. Prescription-strength naproxen is typically prescribed for only a few days or weeks. Do not take over-the-counter naproxen products for longer than 10 days for pain or three days for fever. If symptoms get worse or persist for too long, seek medical help for more appropriate treatment.

Naproxen Dosage For Pets

Never give a pet naproxen or any other human medication except under the supervision of a veterinarian. Because safe dosing for animals is challenging, veterinarians rarely use naproxen in pets, preferring safer and more predictable drugs to relieve pain or swelling. Naproxen is most commonly prescribed to horses, but in some rare cases, veterinarians will use it in dogs to treat osteoarthritis, joint pain, or muscle pains. Doses and dosing schedules will be determined by the practitioner.
