What Is The Correct Aleve Dosage To Relieve Pain

Aleve is approved for use in adults and children over 12 years. As with other NSAIDs, the aim should be to take Aleve at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible.

OTC Aleve Dosing

  • 1 tablet 2-3 times a day as needed. The maximum dose is 3 tablets in 24 hours.

Prescription Naproxen Dosing

  • Pain : 550 mg for the first dose, followed by 250 mg every 6-8 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours. The maximum dose is 1,250 mg on the first day and 1,000 mg in a 24-hour period on subsequent days.
  • Pain : 500 mg to 1,000 mg per day in divided doses or extended-release 750 mg to 1,000 mg once a day.
  • Acute gout: 750 mg initially, followed by 250 mg every 8 hours until symptoms go away or 1,500 mg extended-release tablet on day 1, followed by 1,000 mg extended-release per day until the acute gout attack subsides.

Missed Dose

If you are on a regular dosing schedule of Aleve and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next dose after 6-8 hours or 12 hours as scheduled. Never double up on Aleve doses.

How Do Doctors Determine Who Can Get By With An Otc Nsaid And Who Needs A Prescription One

Because the risk of developing side effects from NSAIDs is dose dependent, your doctor will likely start you on a conservative dose and see how you fare. OTC versions are also cheaper than prescription NSAIDs, so its more cost-effective to try those first.

Whether a patient ultimately needs a prescription-strength NSAID is determined on a case-by-case basis. But because theres very little inflammation involved in OA, those patients typically require lower doses of an NSAID than those with a form of inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

In general, more OA patients may be able to rely on OTC NSAIDs such as Advil and Aleve to manage their pain, while those with inflammatory arthritis may need prescription-strength NSAIDs to get relief, Dr. Bhatt says.

Save Money: Naproxen Comes In Generic Options

Naproxen and its salt formulation have been around for a long time. In fact, the FDA approved the first formulations of naproxen sodium in 1980. Thats good news, because formulations of many naproxen and naproxen sodium drugs are now available generically, saving you dollars at the pharmacy.

For example, you can easily use the generic OTC naproxen to get the same pain relief as you would from the more expensive prescription brands. Just be sure to ask your doctor what the equivalent OTC dose would be based on your indication. The OTC products come in a lower strength than many prescription options, so you may need to take a higher OTC dose.

Naproxen is available over-the-counter for relief of menstrual cramps, but generics work just as well and save you money, too. For menstrual cramps, it may be less expensive to use the generic or store brand naproxen sodium than the branded products like Midol Extended Relief or Pamprin All Day, so its worth a comparison. Be sure to check the package size, too, to be sure you are getting a good deal.
