Ibuprofen vs. Aleve vs. Turmeric vs. Tylenol (Updated with Aspirin) Pharmacist Chris Explains

So which pain med reigns supreme? While theres no right answer, these pointers can help you decide.

Most research suggest acetaminophen and ibuprofen have similar results in controlling fevers, so pick what works for you.

Stomach trouble

If you have a sensitive stomach or find that ibuprofen causes heartburn or nausea, give acetaminophen a whirl.

Period pains

Ibuprofen reduces your bodys production of prostaglandins. These are the chemicals that trigger the uterus to contract and start periods each month. Ibuprofen can ease menstrual cramps and may also make menstrual bleeding lighter.

Other meds

Both ibuprofen and acetaminophen can interact negatively with some prescription and over-the-counter drugs. If youre taking medication, talk to your provider doctor or pharmacist before reaching for the painkillers.

Persistent pain

If youre taking painkillers over several days, consider alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen to lower the risk of side effects.

Both ibuprofen and acetaminophen can control pain in kids. But ibuprofen tends to work better as a fever reducer. Be sure to follow the dosage guidelines on the label for your little ones age and weight.

Whats the takeaway? When used responsibly, ibuprofen and acetaminophen are safe choices for turning down the dial on fever and pain. And isnt it good to have options?

What Is The Correct Acetaminophen Dosage For Children

Dr. Hong recommends using a childs weight instead of age when figuring out how much medicine to give. This table is based on experts and the manufacturers recommendations. It is not intended to replace the advice of a doctor. Before giving your child a dose, check the label to ensure the recommended dosage and concentration agree with the numbers below.

Acetaminophen dosing should not exceed more than every 4 hours or 5 doses in a 24-hour period. Additionally, acetaminophen should not be given with other cough and cold medications that could contain acetaminophen.

If your child is 3 months or younger, consult your healthcare professional before giving the medicine. For any age, call your pediatrician you have any questions or concerns about giving acetaminophen, Dr. Hong says.

Which Pain Reliever Is Right For You

An aspirin may help your nagging headache, but will it reduce a fever, soothe a toothache, alleviate back spasms or reduce knee swelling?

Not all over-the-counter pain medications, including aspirin, are created equal, according to , a Virtua family physician.

“It can get confusing with the number of brands available on the market,” says Dr. Weiner, “but there are only four major over-the-counter pain-killing products – aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen. Each has a different overall effect on the body.”

Ibuprofen Aka Motrin Advil

Ibuprofen and aspirin seem to work the same way in the body because both inhibit the production of prostaglandins, hormone like chemicals involved in causing pain and inflammation. Because of these effects it is widely used for arthritis and menstrual pains. Similar to acetaminophen, Ibuprofen can play a role in stomach upset, the most common side effect of both aspirin and ibuprofen. Because ibuprofen inhibits prostaglandins which exert a protective effect on the stomach lining, it increases the chances of stomach upset. However, ibuprofen is a happy medium on the stomach-upset scale between aspirin and Tylenol .

When comparing pain relievers it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each. Unless you have certain diseases, conditions, or pregnant, most individuals wont go wrong with any of the three pain relievers .

In general, anyone who should avoid aspirin for any reason should also avoid ibuprofenand vice versa. Both drugs generally work the same way with similar side effects. What Acetaminophen And Ibuprofen Are Best Suited For

Advil vs Tylenol

Both ibuprofen and acetaminophen are anti-pyretic . However, some studies indicate that ibuprofen has a slight edge in this area.

Ibuprofen is also better for certain types of pain and inflammation back pain, menstrual cramps, sore muscles, toothaches and earaches. A review published in the British Medical Journal concluded that:

  • paracetamol is ineffective in reducing pain and disability or improving quality of life in patients with low back pain.
  • paracetamol offers a small but not clinically important benefit for pain and disability reduction in patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis
  • patients taking paracetamol are nearly four times more likely to have abnormal results on liver function tests compared with those taking oral placebo

Tylenol is preferred for headaches and arthritis pain.

Other Medicines That Contain Common Painkillers

Many over-the-counter cough and cold medicines contain acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen, and taking multiple doses of one of these pain relievers can be dangerous. If you’re taking one of the combination medicines, read the label carefully so you don’t accidentally take too much acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen overall and cause serious side effects.5

It’s tempting to assume that because a medicine is sold over the counter, it must be safe. But these commonly used medications can cause some serious side effects. However, when used as advised, these pain medications can be powerful tools to help relieve pain, fever and inflammation. If you find you need to use higher doses or need to use these meds more frequently, consult your healthcare provider.

Which One Works For Longer

Tylenol and Advil both work for a similar length of time

Tylenol is short acting with a relatively quick onset of action. Pain-relieving effects last for three to four hours however, it is important Tylenol is not taken more often than every four to six hours, and the maximum of 4000mg per day is not exceeded. In some cases a lower maximum dose should not be exceeded.

Advil is a short-acting NSAID, with a relatively quick onset of action. Pain-relieving effects last for approximately four hours. Like Tylenol, it is better suited for the treatment of acute pain. Ibuprofen tablets/capsules can be given every four to six hours. If you are taking Advil over-the-counter, the maximum recommended daily dose is 1200mg. Do not take more Advil than recommended without consulting your doctor.

When I work as a pharmacist in a retail pharmacy, I get a lot of questions from customers on which painkiller is best for them. Unfortunately, the answer is usually not black and white: it really depends on their medical conditions. Thats why pharmacists are here to recommend products using their professional judgment. Thank god the BC provincial bylaw states that a retail pharmacy must not be open for business unless a pharmacist is in the pharmacy. Consumers can take advantage of having a pharmacist to recommend painkillers for them.

However, some non-prescription painkillers, such as Tylenol, Advil and Aspirin are also available in non-pharmacy settings. Moreover, say when youre in pain in the middle of the night, you may just want to take a painkiller from your medicine cabinet, or find one in a convenience store nearby ASAP. What should you do then? This article will serve as a guideline for consumers to know what medications they can take for pain relief, and also the difference among the non-prescription painkillers available on the market.

Acetaminophenknown by the brand-name Tylenolis an analgesic and antipyretic medication. The exact way in which acetaminophen works is unknown, but it is believed to act on certain receptors in the brain involved with the sensation of pain. It also works on the temperature-regulating area of the brain to reduce fever. Unlike NSAIDs, acetaminophen does not have anti-inflammatory effects and may not work as well for inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Ibuprofen is an NSAID that can be used for pain, inflammation, and fever. Common brand names of ibuprofen include Motrin and Advil. Ibuprofen is a nonselective COX enzyme inhibitor that blocks the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that cause inflammation. Because of its effects on the COX enzymes, the use of ibuprofen carries a risk of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects.

Is Acetaminophen Or Ibuprofen More Effective

Ibuprofen vs Aleve vs Tumeric vs Tylenol. Pharmacist Chris Compares.

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen may have differences in effectiveness when treating fever and different types of pain. Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, ibuprofen may be more effective than acetaminophen for treating inflammatory pain conditions. However, acetaminophen carries a lower risk of serious side effects than ibuprofen.

In one meta-analysis, ibuprofen was found to be similar to or better than acetaminophen for treating pain and fever in adults and children. Both drugs were also found to be equally safe. One study in the analysis found that acetaminophen is safer with fewer side effects than ibuprofen. This analysis included 85 different studies on adults and children.

For acute and chronic pain conditions, ibuprofen has been shown to be more effective than acetaminophen. In one study, ibuprofen was found to be more effective than paracetamol for treating different pain conditions, such as migraines and osteoarthritis. Another study concluded similar results and found that ibuprofen produced better pain relief and tolerability than acetaminophen for osteoarthritis.

Depending on the condition being treated, one treatment option may be preferred over the other. How To Alternate Between Ibuprofen And Acetaminophen For A Childs Fever

In cases of persistent fever, some parents may opt to alternate between ibuprofen and acetaminophen to reduce a childs discomfort. When the fever is high, the medication might not bring the childs temperature down to a normal body temperature, and thats ok as long as the temperature comes down a little and the child is comfortable. Dr. Hong recommends that parents first consult with their pediatrician for advice about the causes of a persistent fever. After receiving the doctors OK, here is an example of how a parent might alternate between these two medications:

Noon The child has a fever and the parent gives the proper dose of ibuprofen.

1 p.m. The child still has a fever, the parent may opt to give a proper dose of acetaminophen.

2 p.m. The child still has a fever. However, because four hours havent passed since the first dose of acetaminophen and six hours havent passed since the first dose of ibuprofen , no more medication can be given. Try other methods to help such as laying a cold washcloth on the childs forehead.

3 p.m. If the child still has a fever, its still too soon for more medication: Four hours havent passed since the first dose of acetaminophen and six hours havent passed since the first dose of ibuprofen , no more medication can be given. Try other methods to help such as laying a cold washcloth on the childs forehead.

Parents should not hesitate to contact the pediatrician if a child continues to have a persistent fever.

Where To Turn For Pain Relief

The first line of treatment for many knee and hip problems includes taking over-the-counter pain medications. Acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen are the most common pain medication options. However, these pain medications have a variety of side effects, so it’s important to discuss your personal health risks with your doctor when considering long-term use for chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Acetaminophen is usually effective for mild pain and is easy on the stomach. However, it is toxic to the liver at high doses. The recommended maximum per day is generally set at 4 grams , which is the equivalent of eight extra-strength Tylenol tablets. But that dosage can still cause liver problems for some people. To be safe, aim for 3,000 milligrams or less, and be cautious of mixing multiple products containing acetaminophen, such as a pain reliever and a cold medication or a prescribed narcotic.

The FDA now recommends using products containing no more than 325 milligrams per pill or capsule in order to avoid excessive dosages. Don’t take acetaminophen if you drink more than a moderate amount of alcohol on a regular basis or if you have liver disease.
